What are Drywood Termites?
Drywood termites are a type of termite that infests dry wood in buildings, furniture, and other wooden structures. Unlike subterranean termites, they do not require contact with soil and can live and feed entirely within the wood they infest. Drywood termites are typically found in warm and dry regions, such as the southern United States, but can also be found in other parts of the world. They enter buildings through cracks and crevices in wood or through infested wooden items brought inside. Drywood termite infestations are often difficult to detect, as the insects create small tunnels and galleries within the wood, leaving only small piles of frass (fecal pellets) as evidence of their presence. If left untreated, drywood termites can cause significant damage to wooden structures and furniture over time. Control measures for drywood termites often involve fumigation or localized treatments with insecticides.
How do I know if I have Drywood Termites?
Drywood termite evidence typically includes small piles of fecal pellets, also known as frass, near infested wood or structures. These pellets are small, elongated, and have a characteristic hexagonal shape. Drywood termites create tunnels and galleries within the wood they infest, and they push out their fecal pellets through small holes in the wood. The pellets are often found on surfaces below the infested wood, such as windowsills, floors, or furniture. In addition to frass, evidence of drywood termite infestations may also include small holes in the wood, as well as tiny wings shed by the termites during their swarming phase. If you suspect a drywood termite infestation, it is important to contact a pest control professional for an inspection and treatment recommendations.
